JONESBORO, Ark. - The Southern Illinois women's tennis team was unable to overcome the challenges presented in its first outdoor match of the season, dropping a 6-1 decision at Arkansas State Saturday afternoon.
Melanie Delsart saw her six-match winning streak snapped by Emily Crowe, falling 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles.
Jennifer Dien picked up the only singles victory for the Salukis at the No. 3 spot, taking down ASU's Janie Nowland in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.
In fourth singles, Korey Love quickly went up one set to none but eventually fell in a close three-set match to Biljana Miloshevska, 4-6, 6-4 (10-6).
Southern suffered a loss of the singles point at No. 6 by default, as the Salukis played without an injured Vishakha Sheoran.
Arkansas State took the doubles point as well, teaming up to top SIU 8-4 and 8-6.
"This was our first outdoor match of the year, and we did not adjust well enough to the outdoor game," said SIU head coach Audra Nothwehr. "We need to be more patient and learn to work the point more."
The Salukis return to the court next week as they travel to Hilton Head, S.C. Over the course of the week, SIU will face Charleston Southern, South Carolina State, Georgia Southern and George Mason on its spring break trip.
