STATESBORO, Ga. -- The Southern Illinois men's tennis team dropped its first match in more than a month when it lost to Georgia Southern, 4-3, on Monday, snapping a four-match winning streak.
Undefeated freshman Adam Fabik lost his first singles match of the season to GSU's Juan Melian Puigventos, (2-6, 3-6). Also losing their first match of the season were the doubles duo of Falk De Beenhouwer and Orhan Spahic, who fell 8-1 to Sebastien Felt and Matthijs Verdam.
All three of SIU's match points came from singles wins by sophomore Brandon Florez (1-6, 6-4, 7-6) and freshmen Jorge Cavero (6-2, 2-6, 6-4) and Carlos Do Val (6-7, 6-2, 10-5). In doubles, the Salukis posted one win by the pair of Fabik and Florez, 8-3.
"We came out flat and never really recovered," head coach Dann Nelson said. "We should improve with each match we have the opportunity to play outdoors."
The team will travel to Hilton Head, S.C., and play George Mason tomorrow at 11 a.m.
