CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Mid-American Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships continued with preliminaries Friday afternoon in five individual events.
Csaba Gercsak will compete in his first championship final tonight, as he and Cesar Perez finished in the top eight in the 400 IM to start the day.
Justin Wolfe led the Southern charge in the 100 butterfly prelim, taking first place by .03 seconds. Tony Bousquet finished eighth overall to also qualify for tonight's final heat. Seyi Fatayi-Williams, Jake Lucheon and Juan Arbelaez Osorio all advanced to the B final, earning the chance to score points for SIU in tonight's session.
Juniors Matt Parsons and Matt Kruse finished fourth and sixth in the 200 freestyle to qualify for the championship heat. Kruse is the defending champion in the event, having won the crown last year with a time of 1:38.19. El Badrawi and Mazen Aziz will swim in the 200 free B final.
In the 200 breast, Seyi Fatayi-Williams finished fourth at 56.80, while Steve Wood just missed the A cut, finishing ninth overall at 57.52.
Perez will have a shot at another championship title in the 100 backstroke, as he finished in fifth place in the preliminaries. Kyle Riekena advanced to the consolation final in 15th place.
Tonight's action will resume at 7 p.m. CT, with the final races in these events in addition to the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relay, as well as the B final for the three-meter dive.
