DES MOINES, Iowa - The Drake Bulldogs picked up where Northern Iowa left off Sunday, handing Southern Illinois its second 7-0 shutout in as many days.
"The match was a lot closer than the score indicated," said head coach Audra Nothwehr. "We have no problem fighting, we just need to work on building our confidence and believing we should be winning these matches."
The Salukis (9-12, 1-4 MVC) split the two contested doubles matches but still forfeited the point by defaulting at the third spot. Korey Love and Anastacia Simons came out on top in a grudge match at No. 2, 8-7 (7-5).
Southern rallied in singles play, pushing Drake (12-8, 3-2 MVC) in all five matches it played.
The first four spots were decided in straight sets, but Melanie Delsart and Anita Lee battled their second sets to 7-6 to force a tiebreaker.
Simons was the only Saluki to pick up a set victory, winning her first set at No. 5, 6-3, before falling in the next two.
SIU returns home next weekend for the final swing of the regular season before the Missouri Valley Conference tournament April 29-May 1 in St. Louis, Mo. The Salukis will take on Illinois State Friday, April 22 at 1 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. matchup with Bradley on Saturday, April 23. Southern's lone senior, Vishakha Sheoran, will he honored prior to the match Saturday.
