CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois swimming and diving program kicked off the 2011-12 season on Friday night with the Saluki Miler. The competition was a 1650-yard distance race at the Recreation Center pool. The women's team swam against Illinois State and took the top three individual spots. Four members of the men's team swam the event, but Illinois State did not swim on the men's side.
The Salukis took the top three places in the women's event. Kirsten Groome won the event, finishing in first by nearly 40 seconds. Jennifer Kwok and Hannah Pinion came in second and third, respectively. The only other Saluki woman to swim, Jessica England, came in 7th of 16.
Four Saluki men swam the event. Junior Csaba Gercsak won the event going away. Cesar Perez finished in second place. Freshman Caleb Coots finished just three seconds behind Perez, and Mazen Aziz rounded out the competition.
SIU and ISU head to Little Grassy Lake in Marion, Ill., tomorrow morning for a 5K Open Water swim. The event is set to start at 9 a.m.
