COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Southern Illinois swimming and diving teams wrapped up competition at the Mizzou Aquatic Center on Friday. The women's team dropped decisions to Missouri, Kentucky and Arkansas. The men's team lost to Missouri and Kentucky.
The competition was Southern's toughest of the season. Missouri's women's team was ranked No. 18 nationally and Arkansas was nationally ranked last week. The teams competed in a complete 16-event program.
On the women's side, Pamela Benitez had a hand in all four top-five event finishes that Southern Illinois posted. Benitez finished second in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:06.13) and posted third-place finishes in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.77) and 500-yard freestyle (4:57.43).
She swam the third leg in the 400-freestyle relay team that finished fifth in a time of 3:34.76. Holly Johnson, Luisa Silveira and Rachael Barry swam the other three legs.
Newcomer Till Pallmann led the men's side, which posted 11 top-five finishes. Pallmann finished second in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:40.78) and 500-yard freestyle (4:35.01). No other SIU male finished higher than third in an event.
Pallmann also contributed to a second-place finish for the 400-yard freestle relay team (3:06.23.) Juan Arbelaez led off the relay, followed by Estaveo Andrade, Pallmann and Oleg Rabota.
Calvin Kolar was the only Saluki male to post three top-five individual finishes. Kolar finished fourth in both the 100-yard breaststroke (58.69) and 200-yard breast stroke (2:07.61). He finished fifth in the 200-yard individual medley (1:55.89).
Juan Arbelaez posted top-five finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (21.21, 4th) and 100-yard freestyle (46.53, 3rd). Csaba Gercsak finished fourth in the 1000-yard freestyle, and Rabota finished third in the 200-yard backstroke (1:53.17). The 200-yard medley relay team started out the meet with a fifth-place finish (1:34.62).
The Salukis are back in action this weekend for the first home meets of the year. Southern Illinois hosts the Air Force men on Friday and both the men and women of Missouri State on Saturday at the Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium at the Student Recreation Center.
