The 2012 State Farm MVC Individual Tennis Championships concluded today in Wichita, Kan., with Southern Illinois bringing home two titles.
Senior Melanie Delsart claimed the No. 1 singles championship, defeating Klavdija Rebol of Drake in the finals, 6-0, 7-6. The Saluki duo of Jennifer Dien and Natasha Tomishma brought back the No. 2 doubles championship after defeating a team from Wichita State, 8-3.
"We feel like we are very strong this year, and I am proud of how we competed," said head coach Audra Nothwehr. "We had a lot of three-set matches that could have gone either way, but played really well, overall."
Anita Lee and Anastacia Simons finished in third place in No. 2 doubles after defeating a pair of Creighton players (8-5). Tomishima fell in the championship match of No. 3 singles (7-6, 6-3, 6-1), and Gisela Cairo Baza finished with third place in No. 7 singles defeating Lauren Watts of Bradley (6-0. 6-0). Simons added a third place showing in No. 6 singles after beating Gabby Phillips of Illinois State (6-4, 6-2).
"Our seniors have really stepped up to be leaders, and Melanie showed that, even though she wasn't playing at 100 percent physically throughout the tournament," said Nothwehr. "We have a lot of players stepping up this year, especially Natasha and Jennifer, who are playing like a No. 1 doubles pair."
The Salukis will be back in action Sunday, Oct. 14, when they host the SIU Fall Classic.
