Washington named MVC Newcomer of the Week

CARBONDALE, Ill.-- Southern Illinois freshman Azia Washington has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week after her performance Saturday at Chicago State.
Washington posted career-highs of 17 points and 17 rebounds in the win over the Cougars for her first career double-double in addition to recording two assists, two steals and a block. Washington's efforts were especially crucial early in the game as she scored 10 of SIU's first 17 points.
"Azia really kept us in the game in the first half, pretty much single-handedly," SIU head coach Missy Tiber said following the game. "I was a little bit worried about her because she had a pretty bad cold, but she battled through it and toughed it out. She gave us what we needed."
Washington's Newcomer of the Week honor marks the first of her career and SIU's first MVC weekly honor of the season. The Salukis host Creighton Thursday to open conference play.
