ST. LOUIS - SIU outfielder Austin Montgomery has been selected Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. Montgomery was honored for his performance during the period of February 13-19.
Now in its 13th year of existence, The Valley’s Scholar-Athlete program is sponsored by Prairie Farms, Roberts and Hiland Dairies. On a weekly basis, the Conference honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.
A junior from Marion, Ill., Montgomery batted .615 (8-for-13) with six runs batted in, 11 total bases and a .846 slugging percentage, as the Salukis won two of three games at North Florida (7-4 loss on February 17, 4-2 win on February 18 and 16-12 victory on February 19). He was also named the MVC Player of the Week on Monday.
Montgomery, who has a 3.59 cumulative grade-point average in mechanical engineering, hit a leadoff home run in the top of the seventh inning in the 4-2 triumph on Saturday. He set the tone for SIU’s 16-run outburst on Sunday by driving in two runs in the first inning before finishing with a career-best five RBI.
To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, complete at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performances for a one-week period.
