CARBONDALE, Ill.-- The Southern Illinois track and field teams are set to compete this weekend at the 2012 Missouri Valley Indoor Championships in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
The championship runs Feb. 25-26 and Northern Iowa is hosting the event inside its UNI-Dome, which features a flat 200-meter track.
The Saluki women will be looking to upset the reigning 2011 indoor champions, Wichita State, who was also predicted to place first this year in an MVC pre-championship coaches poll.
On the men's side, Indiana State will look to defend their 2011 title.
During the conference championships, a points system is used in the meet, where each athlete placing in the top eight of their event is awarded a specific amount of points. In a standard scored meet, first place is awarded 10 points, while second place gets eight and so on.
Last year the Saluki men and women captured second place.
The field events have been particularly strong for both teams this season, especially the throwers. J.C. Lambert leads the way for the Salukis, dominating the Valley in the Weight Throw. His mark of 74' 4.25" tops the MVC and ranks fourth in the nation. Jeneva McCallhas the longest throws in the weight and shot put in the conference. McCall also tops the national chart in weight throw, with an impressive 77' 11.5" mark, and also ranks fifth in the shot put nationally.
SIU boasts four other throwers in the top-ten in the Valley.
On the track, Southern also leads the MVC in two events. Stephen Arvanis leads in the 800-meter and Zach Dahleen leads the conference in the Mile.
