ORLANDO, Fla. -The Southern Illinois women's tennis team could not close out what was a 3-1 lead against the Highlanders, losing four-straight singles matches, and falling to NJIT, 4-3.
The Salukis (6-3, 0-0) cruised through doubles play as they have all season, sweeping the Highlanders (11-2, 0-0) and securing the doubles point. Melanie Delsart and Korey Love led the Salukis at the No. 1 position in doubles where they defeated their NJIT counterparts, 8-4. Natasha Tomishima and Jennifer Dien won their match at the No. 2 spot, 8-5. Anastacia Simons and Anita Lee continued their doubles success by defeating an NJIT duo, 8-6.
"The win was there for us, we were solid in doubles play and then won Anita and Melanie's singles matches...but we weren't able to convert on some of the three-setters," said head coach Audra Nothwehr.
Southern jumped out quickly in singles play as Melanie Delsart defeated her opponent at the No. 1 spot (2-6, 7-5, 6-2), and sophomore Anita Lee won her match at the No. 2 position (6-3, 7-6) in a tiebreaker. SIU was not able to capitalize on its early success, dropping the last four matches, and falling to NJIT, 4-3.
The Salukis will be back in action tomorrow, when they play North Dakota at 4 p.m. in Orlando, Fla.
