Bajer, Matthews named MVC Scholar-Athletes of the Week

ST. LOUIS - Alisha Matthews and Brian Bajer of Southern Illinois University have been selected Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. Matthews and Bajer were honored for their performance during the period of April 23-29.
Now in its 13th year of existence, The Valley's Scholar-Athlete program is sponsored by Prairie Farms, Roberts and Hiland Dairies. On a weekly basis, the Conference honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.
A member of the Southern Illinois women's golf team, Matthews, a senior from St. Louis, posted a record-breaking performance in the final round of the State Farm MVC Golf Championship at Terre Haute, Ind., on April 22-24.
Matthews, who has a 3.611 cumulative grade-point average in recreation, established an MVC Championship single-round mark with a five-under-par 67. She finished the tournament with a three-round 223 (82-74-67) to take third place. Matthews' 18-hole card, which was four strokes better than her previous career-best, tied the lowest round in SIU history.
A catcher for the Southern Illinois baseball team, Bajer, a senior from Oak Forest, Ill., hit .417 (5-for-12) with two runs scored, as the Salukis split four games -- defeating Southeast Missouri State (9-5 on April 24) and Missouri State (8-3 on April 28) and losing to Missouri State (1-0 on April 27 and 12-6 on April 29).
Bajer, who has a 3.61 cumulative grade-point average in special education, collected a pair of hits versus Missouri State's Nick Petree on Friday and Cody Schumacher on Sunday.
To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
