CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois swimming team wrapped up its opening weekend with the Open Water 5K on Saturday morning, held at the campus lake. Pamela Benitez won on the women's side and Csaba Gercsak won on the men's side.
SIU competed against Illinois State and Evansville on the women's side and just Evansville on the men's side. Benitez was coming off a win in the Saluki Miler on Friday night, and she won today's 5K with a time of 1:02:57.00. Kirsten Groome (1:03.53.00) was the only other Saluki woman to compete, and she finished second overall in the event. Benitez and Groome's times were the second and third fastest times--male or female--in the event.
On the men's side, Csaba Gercsak won in one hour and six seconds. Caleb Coots (1:03:55) and newcomer Till Pallmann (1:05:21) finished second and third in the event, respectively.
