Swimming and Diving Finish Tri-Meet with Kentucky and Missouri

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University swimming and diving teams wrapped up a two-day competition at the Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium at the SIU Recreation Center on Friday, with both the men's and women's squads losing to Kentucky and Missouri in a tri-meet.

"For us to face this kind of competition is great, and when we get to conference it will be nothing," said head coach Rick Walker. "We won't go into the pool afraid, because we have already faced tougher teams."
Seniors Oleg Rabota and Pamela Benitez provided highlights today for the Salukis. Rabota won the 200-yard freestyle (1:41.91) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:50.77) as well as picking up a second-place finish as part of the men's 200-yard relay team.
Benitez posted three top-three individual finishes on the day, including a second-place showing in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:13.40).
The 50-yard freestyle was a strong event for the SIU women, as Luisa Silveira claimed third place (24.42) and teammates Shailey Brumley (24.74) and Holly Johnson (25.11) finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
Senior Isabela Castro placed fourth in the 200-yard fly with a time of 2:08.87 and Katy Ovington claimed seventh (2:12.38). Helena Amorim came in fourth during the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:11.09.
In the 100-yard freestyle, Benitez (52.41) finished third and Brumley followed at fourth with a time of 53.33. Sarah James took third in the 200-yard backstroke (2:07.60) and teammates Ella Otto (2:10.43) and Morgan Timms (2:10.47) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
On the men's side, Calvin Kolar picked up a second-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:07.03, while freshman Andy Ross finished sixth (2:13.23).
The men's relay teams combined for three top-four finishes on the day. Andres Saavedra, Till Pallmann, Rabota and Shaun Wolfe highlighted the relay events, posting a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:23.69, while Dusan Vukobrat, Jake Lucheon, Matt Frey and Esteavo Andrade finished fourth (1:27.66).
Pallmann finished fourth in two individual events including the 200-yard IM (1:54.62) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:54.27).
Saluki diving wrapped things up with the women competing in the 1-meter dive and the men in the 3-meter dive. Kaixuan Zhang took second place (309.00) and teammate Fengting Chen finished third with a score of 291.95. On the men's side, Kegan Skelton claimed third place (324.30) and freshman Aiden Chipps finished eighth (235.60).
"We wanted the challenge, and this meet was tougher than anything we will go through all year," Walker said. "We had some very good swims and the scores don't reflect how close these races were."
