Women's Tennis surges past Northern Illinois

DEKALB, Ill.- The Southern Illinois women's tennis team defeated in-state rival Northern Illinois earlier today, 6-1.
The Salukis (2-1) had no problem with Northern Illinois, dominating the Huskies in singles play, winning 5-of-6 matches. Sophomore Ariadna Cairo Baza secured her win at the No. 4 position, defeating Mary Malkin 6-4, 7-6 (3). Jennifer Dien bested Northern's Critina Alvarez 6-1, 7-5 to record her fifth straight win of the season. Melanie Delasrt fell at the No. 1 singles slot to Nelle Youel 6-3, 7-5.
Southern clinched the doubles point when Delsart and Anastacia Simons defeated NIU's Malkin and Ilse Pacheco 8-0 at the No. 2 spot. Natasha Tomishima and Dien defeated their NIU counterparts, 8-1.
The Salukis won't be back in action until Feb. 16 when they play host to Eastern Illinois. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
