CARBONDALE, Ill. --The Southern Illinois women's tennis team played host to regional foe Saint Louis today at University Courts, defeating the Billikens, 4-3.
Saint Louis (10-7) gave SIU all it could handle today in a match that could have went either way. Southern took the doubles point from the Billikens after sweeping all three matches. Jennifer Dien and Natasha Tomishima won at the No. 2 spot 8-4 while Gisela Cairo Baza and Ariadna Cairo Baza won at flight No. 3, 8-3.
In singles action each team took three matches. Senior Melanie Delsart won her fourth-straight match after defeating Stephanie Hollis in straight-sets (6-0, 6-0). Ariadna Cairo Baza won (6-0, 6-4) at the No. 5 spot while Anita Lee bested Brooke Urzendowski (6-2, 6-2) at flight No. 3.
"Saint Louis was really tough today in singles play," said head coach Audra Nothwehr. "You're not going to play your best everyday -- I am proud of how we fought."
The Salukis will return to MVC play this weekend when they travel to Drake and Northern Iowa for their last road-trip of the year.
