Swimming & Diving win three events at Saluki Miler

CARBONDALE, Ill. -The Southern Illinois swimming and diving teams opened the season with the Saluki Miler on Friday. Senior Pamela Benitez and sophomore Till Pallmann won the miles for the women and men, respectively.
Benitez clinched the women's mile with a time of 17:08.77, nine seconds faster than her Saluki teammate Helena Amorium who finished second, with a time of 17:17.78. The two separated themselves from the competition as Illinois States' Cecilia Holmes placed third with a 17:46.69 time. Illinois State and Ohio Wesleyan were the competition in the season-opening contest.
On the men's side, Pallmann dominated the event, winning by over a minute with a time of 15:57.59. Oleg Rabota (17:00.72), Kristian Troxel (17:08.51), Shaun Wolfe (17:10.51), and Caleb Coots(17:25.97) also competed for the SIU men.
The meet also featured the 400-yard individual medley, Illinois State's Holmes won the women's side for the second straight year with a time of 4:34.58. Hannah Pinion (4:39.10) and Isabela Castro (4:40.09) finished second and fourth, respectively.
Junior Calvin Kolar (4:09.03) won the 400 IM on the men's side followed by Pallmann (4:11.25) and Bobby Wood (4:18.32). Brandon Vuong (4:28.45) and Josh LeClair (4:38.10) also competed for the Salukis.
SIU has a quick turnaround as they compete tomorrow morning in the 5K Open Water Swim at 10 a.m. The event will be held at Little Grassy Lake in Makanda, Ill.
