CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's tennis team picked up its first Missouri Valley Conference win of the year with a 5-2 win over the Evansville Purple Aces.
The Salukis (11-4, 1-0 MVC) started the day winning the doubles point over the Aces, who have not won in Carbondale since 2006. Korey Love and Anita Lee teamed up at the No. 2 slot with a close 8-7 (2) win over Marketa Trousilova and Marina Moreno. Ariadna Cairo Baza and Polina Dozortseva won easily at No. 3 to secure the doubles point and give the Salukis a 1-0 lead headed into singles action.
Southern went on to win 4-of-6 singles matches to secure the 5-2 win over UE and improve to 7-0 at home this season. Meagan Monaghan picked up a win at the No. 3 slot with a 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 win over Moreno. Dozortseva defeated Kelsey Costales 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 4 slot while A. Cairo Baza won 6-1, 6-3 at the fifth spot.
Junior Gisela Cairo Baza won her second-consecutive match with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Mina Milovic at the No. 6 slot.
"I'm proud of how we played, especially down low in the lineup," said head coach Audra Anderson. "The matches we lost were by mere points. We just need to be a little more aggressive when playing tiebreakers."
The Salukis are back in action Thursday when they travel to St. Louis to take on the Billikens. First serve is slated for 1:00 p.m.
