Bryn Handley and Kaixuan 'Sherry' Zhang earn MVC weekly accolades

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- In the second week of competition, the SIU women's swimming and diving team swept the MVC weekly awards, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. Sophomore Bryn Handley was named both MVC Swimmer of the Week and MVC Scholar Athlete of the Week while senior Kaixuan 'Sherry' Zhang as MVC Diver of the Week for the second consecutive week.
MVC Swimmer of the Week: Bryn Handley, Sophomore
200-yard freestyle - 1:52.01 - 1st of 8
500-yard freestyle - 4:57.36 - 1st of 8
400-yard freestyle relay - 51.94 (split) - 3:31.04 (relay) 1st of 5
In the second meet of the season, sophomore Bryn Handley helped the Salukis advance to a close 125-116 victory over reigning MVC champions, Missouri State. Handley finished the meet on Saturday with wins in the 500- and 200-yard freestyle races. Handley's 4:57.36 finish in the 500-yard freestyle broke a pool record at the Hammons Student Center. She finished the 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.01. Heading into the final race of the meet, the Salukis trailed Missouri State by four points. Handley anchored the final 400-yard freestyle relay, swimming with a split time of 51.94 to help the Salukis top Missouri State and advance to win the meet by nine points. Handley has also found success in the classroom, currently holding a 4.0 cumulative GPA as a Behavior Analysis and Therapy major.
MVC Diver of the Week: Kaixuan `Sherry' Zhang, Senior
1-Meter: 337.29 3-Meter: 321.30
Kaixuan `Sherry' Zhang came out strong last weekend, once again sweeping the competition with wins in the one- and three-meter dives. In the one-meter dive, Zhang beat Missouri State's second place diver, Nina Privitera, by nearly 100 points with a score of 337.29 compared to Privitera's 243.07. The same finishes held true for the three-meter dives, with Zhang in first and Privitera in second, once again with Zhang tallying nearly 100 more points than any other diver at 321.30. This is the second time this season and the 17th time in her career that Zhang has been awarded MVC Diver of the Week.
