MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The Southern Illinois University women's tennis program has sent four players to compete in the ITA Central Regional. The championships begin Thursday morning at 8 a.m. and go through Monday.
Seniors Meagan Monaghan and Ana Sofia Cordero, and juniors Athena Chrysanthou and Xiwei Cai will be the four representing SIU. All four players just competed in the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships this past weekend. Cai and Chrysanthou both won fifth place in their flights, winning their final two matches of the tournament. Cordero and Monaghan both advanced to the finals in their bracket and lost. After this weekend all four girls have at least three wins under their belts in this very young season.
"Everything is so great right now," SIU head coach Audra Anderson said. "Our lineup can almost be shuffled in any way. It's a great problem to have. But, for this weekend we are going with the top four that we had at the MVC Individual Championships. They are all coming off a good weekend. I'm excited to see how they play this week."
The Salukis will be up against big competition this weekend. The central division consists of teams from the BIG 12, MVC, BIG 10, SEC, and A-10 conferences.
"We're playing for a regional ranking and possibly a national ranking. We are going to advance as far as we can, and try to get one of those births to the indoor nationals," Anderson said.
SIU's best result at the ITA Regional's under Anderson was a doubles semifinal.
Tomorrow will only feature singles play for SIU. The schedule is listed below. For a complete look at the bracket, and for information on the ITA's, click here.
