Salukis secure first wins of the season

EVANSVILLE, IND. -Â The Southern Illinois University men's and women's swimming and diving teams both picked up a win on the road this weekend. The men's team defeated the Purple Aces, 190-118, and the women's team won, 188-142.
This weekends dual had a fun format to begin the season. The two schools only swam relays on Saturday's portion of the meet. SIU won 11 of a possible 15 races, continuing their dominace against the Aces. Seniors Filippo Dell'Olio and Lucas De Aquino, and junior Michael Wolfe, started things off for SIU picking up the first team win in the 3 x 100 butterfly relay, winning by a margin of six seconds. The men's team continued the momentum winning first and second place in the next two events. They would go on to win seven of eight swimming events, including the mixed 200 yard medley relay.Â
The women's team would start off slow then finish strong. SIU would win their first event in the 3 x 100 breaststroke. Newcomers Laura Carver and Samantha Parsons joined sophomore Jessica Peck, in the victory. After that the Salukis would go on to win the next four events. Upperclassmen Lauren Stockton, Bryn Handley, Kelsie Walker, and sophomore Oliwia Okaj, would take first in the 400 yard freestyle relay, the very same relay the clinched their victory at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships last spring. The women's team would finish with five total wins out of a possible eight.Â
SIU also had success in one and three meter diving. Junior Rachel Williams would finish in second, with freshman Lani Cieszynski right behind her with third, in both the three and one-meter. Williams score of 243.07 in the one-meter was only three points away from matching her personal best last season. On the men's side the Salukis are led by two freshman, Kai Hoffmann-Dussome and Eli Mercado. The duo would take first and second place in the one-meter and three-meter.
The Salukis will be back in action this upcoming weekend for the MVC shootout.
