CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois volleyball team will travel to the state of Iowa over the weekend to take on Drake and Northern Iowa. The Salukis take on the Drake Bulldogs on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m., before traveling to Cedar Falls to face the Panthers at 7 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN3.
The Opponents
• Drake (12-10, 3-5) comes into Friday's contest having lost five of its last seven matches. Most recently, the Bulldogs defeated the Bradley Braves in four sets. SIU holds a commanding 41-19 all-time edge over the Bulldogs, including an 18-11 record at Drake in a series that dates back to 1978. The Salukis are a perfect 9-0 against the Bulldogs under Coach Ingram.
• UNI (15-7, 6-3) comes into Saturday's contest winners of their last five matches, and six of their last seven. The Panthers' lone loss during that stretch came against Missouri State on Sept. 30. The Salukis trail the all-time series with the Panthers, 13-52, dating back to 1982. Ten of Southern's 13 all-time wins have come at home, while SIU is 6-3 against UNI under Coach Ingram, including the five-set win over the Panthers on Sept. 23.
• SIU last swept the Iowa road trip during the 2013 season, when SIU disposed of UNI in four sets on Nov. 8, and followed with a sweep at Drake the following night.
Team Notes
• Meg Viggars is the only current NCAA DI player with 2,000 assists/1,000 digs/800 kills. Corrine Baine of Harvard isn't far off, as she needs 15 kills to join Viggars. The Stokes-on-Trent, England native can once again join a class of her own, as she needs 34 kills to reach 900 for her career.
• The Salukis recorded seven service aces in the win over Evansville on Oct. 15, their most against a Missouri Valley Conference opponent this season, and the most since SIU recorded eight in an Oct. 31, 2015 win at Bradley.
• SIU also tallied just two service errors in the win over Evansville, their fewest in a match this season, and the fewest since Southern recorded just two service errors in SIU's Nov. 14, 2015 win over Indiana State.
• Andrea Estrada needs 11 kills to reach 1,000 for her career. The redshirt junior would become the 14th Saluki all-time to reach the 1,000 kill-plateau, and the fifth to do so during their junior season. It has taken Estrada 85 matches (318 sets) to reach 989 kills for her career, and provided she reaches 1,000 in the next four matches, will become the third-fastest in school history in terms of matches played to reach 1,000. Her 989 kills are the 15th-most of any junior (or younger) in NCAA D1, and the 91st-most overall.
Four Salukis have reached the 1,000-kill mark during their junior season. Here they are in order of how quickly it took them to do it.
Dana Olden (1989-92): 76 matches/293 sets
Kristie Kemner (1999-02): 80 matches/274 sets
Andrea Estrada (2013-pres.): 85 matches/318 sets
Marlo Moreland (1995-98): 89 matches/286 sets
Jennifer Berwanger (2006-10): 96 matches/342 sets

• Hannah Kaminsky became the fifth Saluki to reach the 3,000 career assist plateau earlier this season, while Meg Viggars joined the 2,000-assist club with her 23 assists in the win over Illinois State on Saturday. • The Salukis hit a season-best .607 in set one of their three-set loss to Wichita State on Oct. 10. It marked the first time since Sept. 19, 2009 that SIU has hit .600 or better in a single frame.
