BLOOMINGTON, IND. – The Southern Illinois University women's tennis team will be heading out of town this weekend for their final tournament of their fall schedule. The dawgs will be competing in Indiana's Alternate Regional Championships, which will feature nine different schools and around 40 athletes.
Yana Golovkina, Polina Dozortseva, along Vitoria Beirao, Mary Ellen Green, and Caroline Taty will be representing SIU at the championships. This will be the girl's first tournament since the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships two weeks ago.
"It's going to be tough for us," SIU head coach Audra Anderson said. " The competition at this tournament is really good and our girls need to be challenged. The bottom half of our lineup has been the highlight so far, so I'm excited to see how they do this weekend. "
All the girls competing this weekend have a combined record of 14-10 in singles play. MVC title winners, Dozortseva and Golovkina, are a combined 9-1 this fall in singles play, with winning streaks of four and two straight, respectively. Coach Anderson tells us that the regional will be the first true test for the players going this weekend.
The field this weekend is stacked with big name teams like Notre Dame, Indiana, Purdue, Marquette, and Western Michigan to name a few.
"This tournament will definitely be a chance for these girls to move up in our lineup and they need to take advantage of opportunities like this. It's tough for us to find tournaments of this caliber. Big name schools typically have more private tournaments that we don't get invites to. So, when we do get the offer to come compete, we don't pass it up," Anderson said.
The championships begin today and will go through Sunday.
