CHAMPAIGN, ILL. – The Southern Illinois University women's swimming and diving team split with the University of Illinois and Illinois State today in a three way dual. The Dawgs fell to the Fighting Illini, 178-103, and defeated the Redbirds, 171-110.
SIU continued their early season momentum; capturing multiple top three finishes in the 16-event meet. The Salukis had 14 top three finishes over the course of the meet, and won six events.
The team was lead by Bryn Handley and Samantha Parsons in the pool, and Rachel Williams from the diving board. All three won two events apiece. Handley started things off for the Dawgs placing first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:51.09. SIU would only have to wait two events before their next win. Parsons continued her fabulous start to her Saluki career, winning the 100-yard breaststroke and then later on the 200-yard breast as well.
On the board SIU won in both the one-meter and three-meter, thanks to Rachel Williams. Williams dominated the field winning each event by a margin of at least 10 points.
SIU had four second place finishes on the day also. Junior, Kelsie Walker, picked up two of them in the 500-yard freestyle and the 1,000-yard freestyle. Parsons took second in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:32.27. The final second place finish came in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
The Dawgs will be back in action this upcoming Wednesday against McKendree.
