The Southern Illinois men's golf team finished eighth out of 11 teams at the Pinetree Intercollegiate after today's final round of action Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw, Ga.Â
The Salukis (292-315-307 = 927) were in the hunt for the tournament title after the first of three rounds yesterday, trailing host and eventual champion Kennesaw State (287-295-280 = 862) by just five strokes. They could not sustain the momentum in rounds two and three, eventually slipping to eighth place, while the No. 32-ranked Owls pulled away from the rest of the pack to win the tournament by 13 strokes over second-place Iowa State.
SIU's Peyton Wilhoit (68-76-78 = 222) was the team's top finisher, tying for 13th place at the 7,108-yard, par 72 course. He matched his career best with a 68 in the first round. In today's final round, a pair of freshmen delivered two of the team's best scores, as Sam Meek (74-80-74 = 228) and Frankie Thomas (79-77-77 = 233) each carded sub-80 rounds.
