Walker and Williams win MVC weekly award

CARBONDALE, ILL. -Â Southern Illinois University continues their hot start to the 2016-17 season, taking home the Missouri Valley Conference's first two weekly awards. Juniors Kelsie Walker and Rachel Williams have been named this week's swimmer and diver of the week.Â
In the Salukis relay dual with Evansville this past weekend, Kelsie Walker helped capture two victories and one second place finish for the SIU. The junior swam the second leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay that finished with a time of 3:36.43. Walker's 53.18 time was the second fastest time of all the swimmers in this event. In the 500-yard relay Walker would be in the pool third swimming the 150-yard portion for the Salukis. SIU would win that relay by nearly seven whole seconds. Walker's final swim of the day would be in the 200-yard freestyle. Her time of 24.64 seconds would help her team to a second place finish behind Evansville, only losing by .61 seconds.

Rachel Williams started off the season strong this past weekend, finishing in second place in both the one-meter and three-meter diving. Williams posted a score of 243.07 in the one-meter, which was only three points away from tying her personal best from last season. In the three-meter the Saluki finished just four points shy of first place, posting a score of 262.05. Williams' solid performance on the board gave Southern Illinois 8 total points in their victory over the Evansville Purple Aces.
