The win marks SIU's first over a Power 5 conference opponent since 1993.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Led by a career-high 18 points from Carlie Corrigan, the Southern Illinois women's basketball team never trailed in a 64-61 win at Purdue Sunday evening.
I'm just really proud of this team," said fourth-year head coach Cindy Stein. "As I told them, it is an amazing thing, we just fought and fought and played with great energy. We didn't do everything right, it was a little ugly at times, but it was a good ugly."
Corrigan's 18-point outing came on 7-of-11 shooting, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Kylie Giebelhausen added 15 points, three rebounds, two blocks and two steals, while Lauren Hartman had a game-high 16 rebounds.
The win marks SIU's first victory over a Power 5 conference opponent since 1993, and the first win at Purdue since Feb. 2, 1980.
"I felt like we made plays when we needed to," Stein said. "We were hanging on by a thread and we got it done."
The Salukis (2-1) scored the first four points of the game and opened up a 15-4 lead before the first media timeout was called with 3:31 remaining in the first quarter. It was during that timeout that Corrigan and her teammates could feel an upset brewing.
"When we got out (to the 15-4 lead) before in the very first quarter, at the media timeout I was like, dang, we're gonna do this," Corrigan said. 'We're gonna win this game. To stay ahead by that big of a margin, you always want that to happen. But they're going to go on a run, and were going to go on runs, that's the game of basketball. But for us to stay so poised when they did go on runs, that was a very mature moment for us."
The Salukis maintained their ten-point lead to close the first quarter, and led by 12 at the half. SIU went ahead 50-37 on a jumper by Nicole Martin late in the third, but the Boilermakers (1-3) closed the quarter on a 10-2 run to cut their deficit down to five, 52-47.
Purdue cut even further into SIU's lead with under six minutes to go in regulation, drawing to within one on two of Ashley Morrissette's game-high 28 points. The final four minutes was a tense, back and forth affair in which the Boilermakers got to within one on three occasions.
With SIU leading 62-61 and :16 seconds remaining in regulation, Purdue fouled Rishonda Napier. The Burbank, Calif. native calmly sank both free throws and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe, including 4-for-4 during the final minute of play.
"That what I love about Rishonda," Stein said. "I feel like her shot selection wasn't necessarily as good as it can be, and should've been better but I love the fact she wanted the ball and wanted to be fouled because she has that kind of confidence."
The Salukis shot 38.3% (23-of-60) from the field, including 6-of-18 from beyond the arc, and outrebounded the Boilermakers, 42-to-39.
SIU returns to action Wednesday, Nov. 23, when they travel to Edwardsville, Ill. to tangle with the SIUE Cougars. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
