UAB defeats SIU, 64-49
CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois women's basketball team suffered its first home loss of the season after UAB took a lead late in the first quarter, and defeated the Salukis, 64-49, Saturday inside SIU Arena.
Southern struggled to get consistent offensive production from multiple Salukis, as only Rishonda Napier scored in double-figures. In contrast, all nine who played for UAB scored at least three points and a pair of Blazers scored in double-figures, with Whytney Singleton leading all scorers with 14 points.
Napier paced the Salukis (3-4), as she reached double-figures for the third-straight game. She tallied 12 points to go along with three assists, three steals and three rebounds. Her 12 points moved her past D.D. Plab for seventh on SIU's all-time scoring list.
Kim Nebo narrowly missed out on her second double-double of the season, as she scored eight points and adding 10 boards, while Kylie Giebelhausen finished with six points, six boards and two assists.
UAB (4-2) was led by Singleton, who scored a game-high 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Deanna Kuzmanic shot 3-of-5 from three-point range for 13 points while Miyah Barnes added nine points in 24 minutes of play.
"Right now we're just not very good," fourth-year head coach Cindy Stein said. "I don't want to sugar coat anything. We are just not very good right now but we are trying to put the pieces together."
The Salukis struggled from the floor, shooting 34.5% (20-for-58) from the field, including a season-low 15% (3-of-20) from three-point range.
The Blazers shot 43.4% (23-of-53) from the floor and were efficient in their attempts from beyond the arc, as the visitors made 4-of-8.
"I felt like we didn't give them too many wide open threes, but everyone knew when a three-pointer was coming because we didn't rotate well defensively," Stein said.
The Salukis took their only lead early in the first quarter, as a layup by Tiajaney Hawkins sparked a 6-0 run that put Southern ahead, 8-3. Turnovers allowed the Blazers to respond, as they closed out the first quarter on a 12-2 run to build a 15-10 lead.
Southern got to within one on three occasions in the second quarter, highlighted by an and-one by Nicole Martin that brought SIU to within one, 20-19 with 5:40 to play in the first half.
UAB again went on a run, rattling off eight-straight points to build a 28-19 advantage. The Salukis got to within five points on a pull-up jumper by Giebelhausen with :13 seconds remaining in the third quarter, but the Blazers got a quick two before the buzzer to effectively put the game out of reach.
The Salukis will continue their three-game homestand on Friday, Dec. 9 when they host the SEMO Redhawks. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m.
