CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois Salukis take on the Indiana State Sycamores on New Years Day inside SIU Arena. The Salukis are fresh off a 73-57 win over the Loyola Ramblers on Friday, and have won four-straight against the Sycamores, and four of their last five overall. Tip off is set for 1 p.m.
All-Time vs. the Sycamores
The Salukis and the Sycamores meet for the 89th time in a series that dates back to the 1968-69 season. SIU has won four-straight over Indiana State, sweeping the season series in each of the past two seasons under Coach Stein. The series is tied 44-44, with Southern sporting an 18-15 all-time record in home games against the Sycamores.
Scouting the Sycamores
The Sycamores come into Sunday's matinee matchup sporting a 6-6 record after a 57-41 loss at Evansville Friday night. Indiana State shot just 25.5% from the floor, including 17.4% from three in its Valley openers against the upstart Purple Aces. The Sycamores have the top scoring defense in the league, holding opponents to just 60.8 points per game through their first 12 games. The Salukis, on the other hand, are second in the league in both scoring offense (67.9 points/game) and scoring defense (63.7 points/game).
Holding their own against the 3-ball
The Salukis held the Loyola Ramblers without a three-pointer on Dec. 30, as the Ramblers were 0-for-9 from three-point range. It marks the first time since Nov. 13, 2012 that Southern has held an opponent without a 3-ball, when the Salukis held Central Arkansas to 0-for-12 from three. It was the first time that SIU held a conference opponent without a three-pointer since Jan. 19, 2012 against Missouri State, when the Salukis held the Bears to 0-for-11 from downtown. Of the four times a team from the Valley has held an opponent to one or fewer three-pointers, SIU accounts for three of them. The Salukis held Oklahoma and Purdue to just one three-pointer each earlier this season.
Defending the Perimeter
The Salukis are currently ranked 1st in the conference, and 7th in the nation, in opponent's three-point field goal percentage. SIU is holding opponents to just 24.3% shooting from beyond the arc.
Double-Double
Kim Nebo recorded the sixth double-double of her career, and her third in the last five games, in SIU's 73-57 win over Loyola on Dec. 30. The Katy, Texas native scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds against the Ramblers, and the Salukis improved to 4-0 this season, and 6-0 all-time, when Nebo records a double-double.
Hawkins' career night
Tiajaney Hawkins was the spark that ignited the Saluki offense in the 73-57 win over Loyola on Dec. 30, as she set or tied career-bests in points (14), defensive rebounds (3), and field goals made (7). She was also a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor.
Still Perfect
Rishonda Napier extended her free-throws made without a miss streak to 32 in the win over Loyola, which is the 12th longest streak in MVC history. Here are the longest such streaks in MVC history.

Making shots in the second half
The Salukis shot 69.2% (18-of-26) from the field in the second half in the win over Loyola, their highest field goal percentage in a half this season. It also marks the second-straight game in which the Salukis have shot 65% or better in the second half, as SIU shot at a 68% (17-of-25) clip in the final 20 minutes against the South Dakota Coyotes.
Napier cracks the top-5
Rishonda Napier scored 20 points on an efficient 7-for-11 from the field in the win over Loyola on Dec. 20, moving her past Petra Jackson (1982-86) for fifth on SIU's all-time scoring list. Jackson is currently an assistant coach for the St. Louis Surge, a women's professional basketball team playing in Women's Blue Chip Basketball League (WBCBL).
29 points from Fourth
Napier needs just 29 points to pass Sue Faber (1979-83) for fourth on SIU's all-time list, and just 60 points to pass Amy Rakers (1987-91) to move into second place. From there, she has a ways to go to break former teammate Cartaesha Macklin's school record of 1,779, needing 301 points in her remaining 18-plus games.
Moving on up
Napier also moved into a three-way tie for eighth place in school history with 516 field goals, and her next basket will move her past Bridgett Bonds (1984-88) and Terica Hathaway (1997-01) for eighth. Dyana Pierre (2012-16) has the seventh-most field goals made in school history with 581.
Four threes away
Napier also needs just four three-pointers to break Teri Oliver's school record of 235, set in 2012. She went 4-of-5 from three-point range in Southern's win over Loyola on Friday.
Splash Sisters
Rishonda Napier and Kylie Giebelhausen are both lifetime 35% shooters from outside of the arc, with Giebelhausen shooting 35.5% through three seasons, and Napier's career shooting percentage rising to 35.2% after an efficient 4-of-5 night from three-point land against Loyola. Giebelhausen currently leads the Valley with 31 three-pointers made, while Napier is in second with 26.
Expanded Role
Carlie Corrigan was elected one of three captains this season and has responded accordingly, as she's started 11 of SIU's 12 games this season and has more starts this season than in her previous three seasons combined. The Plainfield, Ill. native is one of three Salukis who have made 20-plus three-pointers this season, as she netted three in Friday night's win over Loyola. She's made at least three from outside the arc in five games this season, a feat she had accomplished just once coming into her senior campaign.
Becoming a Mainstay
Nicole Martin has started five-straight games for the Salukis, a stretch that has seen SIU win four out of five games. She has the highest field goal percentage (61.5%, 16-of-26) of any Saluki with at least 25 attempts and is averaging 6.6 points and 4.9 rebounds during that stretch. She logged career-highs in minutes (28) and assists (3), and tied a career-best in blocks (2) in Friday night's win over the Ramblers.
Holding Court
Kylie Giebelhausen has played 35-plus minutes in nine of SIU's 12 contests this season and has done so in six-straight games. She's currently third in the Valley in minutes played (34.2) and ranks in the top-10 in the league in scoring (T-7th; 13.0), assists (7th; 3.0), three-point percentage (4th; 42.5%), three-pointers made (1st; 2.6), defensive rebounds (8th; 4.2), and blocked shots (1st; 1.2).
