CARBONDALE, ILL. – The Saluki Student-Athlete Student Services department (SASS) held its inaugural Career Networking Night event on Monday night in coordination with the D.A.W.G. (Developing Athletes With Goals) program.
Student-athletes from every Southern Illinois sports program were in attendance to gain career advice from a panel of local, successful business people and Saluki Athletics supporters. Panel members included:
The panel began by discussing their own career paths with the student-athletes. They also covered topics such as social media in the workplace, do's and don'ts in the job market, the importance of people skills, and what they look for in potential employees. The Q and A style panel session took place inside Tedrick Auditorium at SIU Arena and lasted one hour.
Following the Q and A, the panel, along with all the student-athletes, headed down to the Cook Club in the Arena for refreshments and cookies. During this time, the student-athletes had the opportunity to introduce themselves and talk one-on-one with panel members.
"It was a great opportunity for student-athletes who are about to transition into the working world to get the chance to hear from successful people from the community," senior women's golfer Brooke Cusumano said. "It was a very inspiring experience for me, and I was lucky to get the chance to talk with all of these professionals."
SIU Athletic Director Tommy Bell was in attendance as well.
"What a great event for our student-athletes," Bell said. "The panel provided many important nuggets of information that will give our student-athletes an edge as they enter the workforce."
