ST. LOUIS, Mo. – In the final week of regular competition, Saluki freshman Emma Brazeau and senior Kaixuan 'Sherry' Zhang were named Missouri Valley Conference Swimmer and Diver of the Week. This is the fourth time this season that SIU has swept MVC weekly accolades.
In her final home meet before the MVC Championships, senior Kaixuan 'Sherry' Zhang continued her win streak, taking first place in both the one- and three-meter dives. Zhang finished the one-meter dives with a 370.20 score for her best finish of the season. Prior to Saturday's meet, Zhang's highest one-meter mark was 338.55.
Zhang continued to dominate diving with a 395.55 mark in the three-meter dives, once again finishing with a season-best score. Zhang topped her opponents by more than 100 points on both boards. This marks the 21st time Zhang has been named MVC Diver of the Week.
Freshman Emma Brazeau had a successful meet last weekend as well. In Saturday's meet against Evansville, Brazeau came away with a conference-leading time in the 100-yard individual medley, finishing in 1:00.52 for the fastest time in the Missouri Valley Conference this season. Brazeau has had success in the individual medley all season, topping the charts for the Salukis with the fastest 400 IM finish and posting the second-fastest time for the 200 IM.
Brazeau also competed in the 50-yard butterfly on Saturday, coming in at 26.61 for a second place finish. Her leg of the 100-yard medley relay helped the Salukis earn a first place finish in that event as well. Brazeau's 24 total points on the day helped the Salukis top Evansville 191-46. This is Brazeau's first MVC accolade.
The Salukis will host the MVC Championship meet at Edward J. Shea Natatorium in Carbondale next week beginning Wednesday, Feb. 17.
