CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Twelve members of SIU's men's swimming and diving team were named to the Academic All-MAC team on Friday. Southern Illinois had the third-most student-athletes receive academic honors in the conference. Sixty-nine athletes from the MAC's seven teams earned the recognition.
"I could not be more pleased with the continued success our men have had and continue to have in the pool and in the classroom," SIU head coach Rick Walker said. "With their efforts along with our academic staff, they are a group of students that defines impressive."
The following Salukis received Academic All-MAC accolades:
Cody Bailey, Sophomore, 4.0, Biological Sciences
Andre Brilhante, Junior, 3.824, Economics
Alex Crawford, Sophomore, 3.636, Finance
Joao Facciotti, Sophomore, 3.5, Undeclared
Till Pallmann, Senior, 3.296, Mechanical Engineering
Shane Phillips, Sophomore, 3.933, Biological Sciences
Andy Ross, Junior, 3.608, Radio/TV
Andres Saavedra, Senior, 3.685, Architecture
Joe Seguine-Hall, Sophomore, 3.667, Mechanical Engineering
Brandon Vuong, Senior, 3.261, Information Systems Technology
Michael Wolfe, Sophomore, 3.357, Mechanical Engineering
Bobby Wood, Junior, 3.705, Aviation
Sophomore Cody Bailey was one of only three athletes to register a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average. This marks the third consecutive year that seniors Till Pallmann and Andres Saavedra have earned Academic All-MAC recognition. Juniors Andy Ross and Bobby Wood are each earning the honor for the second time.
"Our team sets a very high standard for themselves, and just when you think it's too tough, they bust it down. Now, that's what a Saluki is," Walker said.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
