Nine Salukis win ITA Student-Athlete awards

Both squads named All-Academic teams.
The 2015-16 season was a banner year for the men's and women's tennis programs at SIU and both programs can add to the list of accomplishments with the release of the 2016 All-Academic Teams and Scholar-Athletes by the ITA.
In total, nine Salukis, four from the men's team and five from the women's team, were named as Scholar-Athletes and both teams were named as All-Academic Teams for having cumulative team grade point averages of 3.20 or above.
On the men's team, Jonny Rigby, Piotr Baranski, Wilder Pimentel and Daniel Martinez were named as scholar-athletes. This was the second-straight year that Rigby has achieved the honor.
For the women, Xiwei Cai, Athena Chrysanthou, Polina Dozortseva, Katie Fries and Meagan Monaghan were the team's Scholar-Athletes. Chrysanthou, Dozortseva and Monaghan all earned the distinction last year as well.
Both teams were just as successful on the court as they were in the classroom this year. The men's team was 14-5 and won the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season championship. The women's team was 16-12 and reached the finals of the conference tournament before falling to Wichita State 4-0.
"I'm proud of the way the players represent SIU both in the classroom and on the court," men's head coach Dann Nelson said.
