Salukis claim top spot in pre-season coaches poll

CARBONDALE, Ill. -Â The women's swimming and diving program grabbed the top spot in the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference pre-season coaches poll. The team recieved four of the seven first place votes. Right behind them in the poll was Missouri State, followed by Northern Iowa, Illinois State, and Little Rock.
Last season SIU edged out Missouri State on the final day of the MVC Championships, winning by .5 points to defeat the then reigning champions. The pre-season poll was again by a small margin. The Salukis topped the competition with 46 points, and Missouri State was right  behind them with 45. Northern Iowa finished with 34 points, Illinois State with 29, and Little Rock had 20.Â
The Salukis are returning seven All-Conference selections from last season, including MVC title winners, Sarah James, Lauren Stockon, Kelsie Walker, and Bryn Handley.Â
The team opens up competition this Friday at Evansville.
