Salukis sweep Braves for fourth-straight win

The Southern Illinois volleyball team swept the Bradley Braves in Missouri Valley Conference action Friday night at the Renaissance Coliseum.

The Salukis (13-5, 4-0 MVC) picked up steam as the match progressed in the 25-17, 25-21, 25-11 sweep of the Braves (5-9, 0-3 MVC).

SIU produced 12.0 blocks, including a career-high tying seven from Kolby Meeks. The Salukis hit .330 and held Bradley to .070 hitting.

Abby Barrow led the Salukis with 12 kills, while Meeks and Andrea Estrada each had 10 kills. Meeks hit .600, recording just one attack error, while Estrada did not record a single error en route to a .400 hitting efficiency.

Hannah Kaminsky and Meg Viggars piloted the attack, dishing out 24 and 17 assists, respectively, while Mariana Pilon added 16 digs and Alex Rosignol chipped in five blocks, including one solo.

SIU never trailed in set one, scoring first on back-to-back kills by Meeks. SIU went ahead, 7-4, on a double block by Nellie Fredriksson and Rosignol, and pushed their lead to five, 16-11, on a kill by Barrow. The Salukis cruised from there, hitting .400 in the first frame and tallying four blocks.

It was the Braves who took an early lead in set two, with a Erica Haslag kill giving Bradley an 8-5 lead. The Salukis pulled even on a kill by Fredriksson, and a double block by Meeks and Viggars gave Southern its first lead of the set at 11-10. The Braves regained the lead on a double block of their own, 14-13, but a sideout kill by Barrow knotted the score, 14-14. With the score tied 20-20, SIU rattled off three-straight points and closed the set on a 5-1 run to take the set.

The Salukis kept rolling in set three, scoring the first seven points of set three with Kaminsky serving. Barrow's 11th kill put SIU ahead, 9-1, and Southern kept its foot on the pedal, winning the set 25-11.

The Salukis are back in action tomorrow, Oct. 1, when they take on the Loyola Ramblers. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
