The Southern Illinois University softball program welcomes Lake Land and Kaskaskia to Carbondale this weekend for a doubleheader
CARBONDALE, Ill. – Saluki Softball is set to kick off their fall schedule and play its first doubleheader, September 11. SIU will square off with John A. Logan at 11 a.m. CT and then Kaskaskia College at 1 p.m. at Charlotte West Stadium.
The 2016 Salukis have nine players returning, including all three pitchers from a season ago. The team also welcomes seven newcomers, including five freshmen and two transfers.
"We're trying to get our team to mesh right now," SIU head coach Kerri Blaylock said. "We're working on everything to see where everyone fits. We feel like have 16 kids that can all play, so it's important to see the kids in multiple positions and in different lineups."
The Salukis are coming off a 33-19 season, their highest win total since 2012. Senior Shaye Harre (.368 batting average) and sophomore Brianna Jones (23 wins, 1.92 ERA) were first-team All-MVC last season. Savanna Dover and Sydney Jones were second-team All-MVC, and Merri Anne Patterson earned her second-consecutive All-Defensive team honor.
SIU's first matchup on Sunday will be against John A. Logan. The Volunteers finished last season with an 18-21 overall record and a 9-9 mark on the road. Kaskaskia College finished with a similar overall record of 20-28 and an 8-18 away mark.
