Cai earns weekly MVC honor

CARBONALE, ILL. - The Missouri Valley Conference released their weekly honors for tennis, Tuesday. Junior, Xiwei Cai, has been selected as the MVC women's tennis Athlete of the Week.
This past weekend Xiwei Cai went a perfect, 2-0, in singles play. Late Saturday night Southern Illinois took on SEC opponent Arkansas in O'Fallon, Ill. Cai played at the No. 2 spot for the Salukis and didn't disappoint. She defeated her opponent in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. The junior took this momentum into competition the next day against Eastern Illinois. Cai shined in the instate matchup, again playing at the No. 2 slot. She came out hot winning the first set easily, 6-2. She fell in a tough second set, sending it to a third. She didn't wait around long before ending the match, finishing off her opponent with a dominant, 6-1 win.
The SIU women's tennis team's next match is on Feb. 12 against Central Arkansas.
