Mercado earns second MAC Athlete of The Week Award in 2017

For the second time this season, sophomore Eli Mercado has been named the Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week, this time for his efforts against McKendree and Truman State on Saturday.

The Hobart, Indiana native shattered his personal bests in both the one and three-meter dives on Saturday against McKendree and Truman State. In the one-meter dive, Mercado's score of 340.27 was 80.78 points better than the second place finisher. It was the highest Saluki score in the one-meter dive since 2015. In the three-meter, Mercado set another personal best with a score of 345.52 to win the event by more than 159 points. It is also the best score in the event by any Saluki since 2015.

Mercado's scores this weekend rank him top in the MAC in the one and three-meter dives. Mercado ranks 38th in the NCAA in the one-meter dive and 48th in the three-meter dive.

Previously, Mercado was the MAC Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week on September 28 following a sweep of the one and three-meter dives against Evansville. Mercado has not lost an event in the one-meter dive all-season and has won the three-meter dive twice.

Mercado has earned two more MAC Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week awards than the Salukis earned as a team in 2016-17.
