Maier is first Saluki to earn All-Region since Brian Dixon in 2012.
Redshirt junior Josh Maier earned All-Region honors with a 23rd place finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Ames, Iowa on Friday.
Maier finished Iowa State's 10K course in 23rd place with a personal-best time of 29:41. The Alsip, Ill. native became the first Saluki to earn All-Region honors since Brian Dixon did so in 2012.
Maier paced a young Saluki men's squad that had five of their seven runners making their regional meet debut. Sophomore Cain Hassim was the second Saluki to cross the finish line, as he placed 80th in a time of 30:31 while senior Jonathan Vara finished in 31:16 to finish 127th out of 190.
The Saluki men finished 23rd out of 28 schools, as SIU earned 536 points to best DePaul (692), North Dakota (744), SIU-Edwardsville (759), Creighton (810) and SEMO (816). Iowa State won the men's team title with 69 points, followed by Oklahoma State with 74 points. The top-two team finishers automatically advance to the 2017 NCAA Championships.

The Saluki women were paced by redshirt sophomore Megan Krolak. Krolak finished 76th with a 6K time of 21:31. Senior Claire Darnell wasn't far behind, as she ran 21:45 to finish 99th.Â
As a team, SIU's women finished 27th with 682 points. The Salukis placed ahead of SEMO (714), Nebraska-Omaha (730), SIU-Edwardsville (768), Drake (806), Illinois-Chicago (854) and North Dakota (894). Iowa State (90) and Oklahoma State (103) finished one-two on the women's side as well.
A total of 38 individual runners are selected to compete at nationals following team qualifications. The top-four finishers at each regional from non-qualifying teams receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, as long as they finished in the top 25 at the regional meet. Two at-large bids for remaining runners in a national pool of top-25 regional finishers also will be selected.
