
Saluki Volleyball hosts Drake, Northern Iowa for final homestand of 2017

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Salukis will close out the home portion of their 2017 season with a pair of Missouri Valley Conference contests this weekend. SIU will host Drake at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11, before taking on Northern Iowa at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 12. Sunday's match will be streamed live on ESPN3, while live stats are available for both matches here.
Promotions
On Sunday, the Salukis will take on Northern Iowa at 2 p.m. inside Davies Gym for Senior Day. SIU will celebrate and honor its six seniors following the match; Abby Barrow, Ashley Edelen, Andrea Estrada, Nellie Fredriksson, Kolby Meeks and Gabriella Shepherd.
All-time vs. UNI
The Panthers hold a commanding 54-13 lead over the Salukis in an all-time series that dates back to 1982. Northern Iowa won the most recent meeting between the two schools, a 3-0 sweep in Cedar Falls, Iowa on Oct. 13. The Salukis have won four-straight against Northern Iowa on their home floor, as SIU's Oct. 12, 2013 win broke a 21-match home losing streak to the Panthers that spanned 18 years.
Scouting the Panthers
UNI received votes in the latest AVCA Top 25 poll and have won three-straight matches after a five-set loss at Illinois State on Oct. 27. The Panthers are ranked in the top-10 nationally in seven statistical categories, including assists per set (4th, 14.06/set), digs per set (2nd, 19.28/set), kills per set (2nd, 15.15/set), team assists (2nd, 1,519), team kills (2nd, 1,636), and total team attacks (9th, 4,337). Setter Heather Hook ranks third in the nation in total assists (1,256) and leads the conference with an 11.63 assists per set average. The Panthers already have three hitters with at least 350 kills this season, led by Piper Thomas with 425.
All-time vs. Drake
Drake snapped SIU's 10-match winning streak over the Bulldogs that dated back to 2011 with a 3-1 win on Oct. 14. SIU still holds a 42-20 advantage in the all-time series, including a 23-8 record at home against the Bulldogs. Southern has won six-straight over Drake on its home floor, with its last home loss in the series coming on Sept. 18, 2010 in a 3-0 setback.
Scouting the Bulldogs
The Bulldogs have won five-straight matches coming into their weekend series. Drake has won 23 matches so far this season, the third-most in program history. It marks the program's most wins since the 2010 season. The Bulldogs are ranked in the top-10 nationally in four categories, including digs per set (6th; 19.05/set), attacks per set (2nd; 40.58/set) and total attempts (8th; 4,342). Outside hitter Kyla Inderski does most of the heavy lifting for the Bulldogs offense as she and fellow outside Cathryn Cheek are both over 1,000 swings for the season. Libero Kylee Macke averages 4.8 digs per set, the fifth-most in the league, while setter Paige Aspinall enters the weekend less than 142 assists away from 1,000 on the season.
Season-high for Aces
SIU finished with a season-high 10 aces against Loyola with five Salukis with at least one ace. It marked the first time Southern has recorded 10-plus aces since Aug. 27, 2016 at IUPUI.
55th Career Double-Double
Andrea Estrada recorded her 55th career double-double at Missouri State, as she tallied 13 kills and added 14 digs. Her 55th double-double passes Meg Viggars for third-most in program history. Kristie Kemner holds the school-record with 60.
Kill No. 1000
Abby Barrow recorded her 1,000th career kill in the third set of Monday night's match against Loyola. She is just the 15th Saluki to record 1,000 career kills, and is one of nine in the MVC to have reached the milestone.
Having a career year
Ashley Edelen is thriving as SIU's libero. She has 60 assists and 404 digs, more than doubling her career totals in both categories. Edelen came into her senior campaign with 24 assists and 352 digs. The Louisville, Ky. native surpassed 750 digs for her career with 14 at Missouri State on Nov. 4.
