Salukis open Valley play at Evansville, Indiana State

The Southern Illinois women's basketball team opens Missouri Valley Conference play at Evansville on Friday, Dec. 29 before taking on Indiana State at the Hulman Center on Sunday, Dec. 31. The Salukis are 4-0 in conference openers under fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein, and have won three-straight at Indiana State. Tip-off against the Purple Aces is set for 7 p.m.
All-time vs. the Purple Aces
The Salukis and the Purple Aces will meet for the 57th time in a series that dates back to 1984. The all-time series is tied, 28-28 after Evansville swept SIU a year ago for the first time since the 2012-13 season. The Purple Aces defeated the Salukis 74-61 inside the SIU Arena behind 28 points from Sara Dickey on Feb. 17, 2017. Southern is 4-4 all-time against the Purple Aces under Coach Stein and have won two of its last three in Evansville.
All-Time vs. the Sycamores
The Salukis and the Sycamores meet for the 91st time in a series that dates back to the 1968-69 season. The all-time series is tied 45-45 after a split last season but SIU has won five of the last six against Indiana State. The Sycamores one the series opener a year ago with a 68-53 win at Carbondale on New Year's Day. The Salukis rebounded with a 70-66 win at Terre Haute on March 2 which saw SIU shoot an astounding 70.6% from behind the arc, as Southern connected on 12-of-17 attempts from downtown and limited the Sycamores to 17 first-half points, the fewest points allowed in a first half by the Salukis in the Cindy Stein era, and the fewest since SIU held the Sycamores to just 14 points at the SIU Arena on Jan. 29, 2011. The Salukis have won three-straight in the Hulman Center, including last season's 70-66 win. Prior to fifth-year head coach Cindy Stein's arrival in 2013, Southern hadn't won in Terre Haute since 1999.

Kylie Giebelhausen is a lifetime 45% shooter from the field in six career meetings against the Sycamores, including 44.4% (16-of-36) from behind the arc. The All-MVC First Team selection from a year ago is averaging 11.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2 steals, 1.6 assists and 1.5 blocks in six career games against Indiana State and has reached double figures in four of those six contests. Nicole Martin had eight points and seven rebounds on New Year's Day last season and averaged 6.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in 26 minutes in SIU's two games against the Sycamores last year.

Her 37 career rebounds against Evansville are tied for the most for her against any Valley school, as she also has 37 career boards in six games against the Loyola Ramblers. Giebelhausen has scored in double figures in five of six career meetings against Evansville, including her second career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds on Jan. 22, 2017. Celina VanHyfte tied a career-best with 13 points in 29 minutes in a 66-63 win on Feb. 14, 2016. It is one of four times that the Annawan, Ill. native has reached double figures, and one of two times she has done so in Valley play.

Kylie Giebelhausen ranks fourth in the MVC, and 32nd nationally, in minutes played per game (36.91/game). Of the 31 women ahead of Giebelhausen on the national list 20 are seniors while all three of the players who rank higher in the Valley than the Preseason All-MVC selection play for Illinois State: Viria Livingston (37.82), Paige Saylor (37.36), and Katrina Beck (37.25).

The last time the Salukis were in the Hulman Center they drained 12-of-17 from three-point range, the best three-point field percentage with 10-plus makes in school history. The 12 makes were tied for the fifth-most in program history and marked the fourth time SIU has made a dozen 3-balls in a single contest. Of the nine times that the Salukis have made 12-plus three-pointers in a game, the Sycamores are the only opponent to appear twice on the list. Southern drained 12 against the Trees in Carbondale on Jan. 3, 2008, and nine years later, sank 12 at the Hulman Center on March 2, 2017. Three Salukis made at least three from long distance, including Kylie Giebelhausen, who made 6-of-8 (75%) from three-point land and tied a career-best with 26 points in the win. Carlie Corrigan and Rishonda Napier each added three 3-pointers in the win.

According to warrennolan.com, SIU's RPI ranking is currently 186, which is the fourth-best in the Valley this season. Only UNI (105), Bradley (146) and Drake (150) rank higher. Indiana State's RPI is 292 while Evansville's is 339.
Moving on up
Kylie Giebelhausen ranks 23rd amongst DI players with 214 career three-pointers, which is the most of any active player in the Missouri Valley Conference. The East Peoria, Ill. native ranks 25th in Valley history for career three-pointers, and needs one three-pointer to pass Indiana State's Lisa Verhoff (2002-06) for 24th all-time. The East Peoria, Ill. native is eight three-pointers shy of passing the great Jackie Stiles (1998-01) for 21st in Valley history.
Climbing the Charts
• Her 1,080 career points are ranked No. 139 in the NCAA DI. Valparaiso's Dani Franklin and Missouri State's Liza Fruendt are the only players with more career points in the Valley. She is 14 points shy of passing Kelly Firth for 23rd in program history and 17 points shy of Jasmine Gibson for 22nd all-time.
• The 2017 All-MVC First Team selection has played 3,401 career minutes- the fifth-most in program history. She is 50 minutes shy of passing Dyana Pierre for fourth all-time.
Ranked Nationally Amongst Freshmen
Abby Brockmeyer is averaging 1.09 blocks per game, which is second to Kaylan Hoffman of Evansville for the most by a freshmen in the MVC. Not only does she rank second in the league amongst freshmen for blocked shots, but she is tied for 28th nationally among freshmen in the category.
Martin Leads the Way
Nicole Martin scored in double figures in both of SIU's games at the Puerto Rico Classic, including a career-high 20 points vs. Albany on Dec. 19. Against the Great Danes, the Jefferson City, Mo. native knocked down a career-best 10 free throws to become the first Saluki to score 20-plus points off the bench since Rishonda Napier dropped 23 points on the Wichita State Shockers off the bench on Jan. 25, 2013. Against the University of Miami on Dec. 20, Martin finished with a team-best 14 points on an efficient 5-of-6 shooting, which marked the 14th time in her career that she has reached double figures.
Spark off the bench
Ashley Hummel scored nine points in 11 points off the bench against Miami, including her second career three-pointer. Her nine points tied a season-best.
Active Hands
Rachel Pudlowski nabbed a pair of steals against Miami on Dec. 20 and has now recorded two or more steals in three games this season. Pudlowski's three multi-steal games are second to Kristen Nelson's four for most on the team through 11 games.
Career Day
Kristen Nelson finished with 14 points against Miami on Dec. 20. Not only did she tie a career-high for points, but it was the third time in her career, and second time this season, that the sophomore guard has scored in double figures.
