DAY 1 RESULTS
CEDAR FALLS, IOWA - Southern Illinois University sits in second place after day one of the Missouri Valley Conference Championships. The Salukis are currently only two points behind Missouri State.Â
Day one of the championships featured two different relays, the 200-yard medley and the 800-yard freestyle. The first race was the 200-yard medley, where the Salukis finished in third place. The Dawgs were in second place after the second leg of the race, before falling behind to the Panthers and the Bears. MSU grabbed the top spot, followed by the host team, the University of Northern Iowa. Four seconds separated SIU from the top spot.Â
"When you are thrown a couple of curves you didn't need, you wonder how a team will respond," head coach Rick Walker said. "After tonight, there is no doubt these girls came to fight their way to the end."
Lauren Stockton, Nicole Fuller, Jordan Ries, and Bryn Handley were the next group to get in the pool for SIU. The 800-yard freestyle relay finished in wild fashion, coming down to the wire. The Salukis came out on top, finishing with a time of 7:19.71, less than two seconds ahead of MSU. It was the third-consecutive year that Southern has won the 800-yard freestyle relay at the MVC championships. The victory boosted SIU into second place in the standings, six points in front of UNI.Â
"The medley relay had two new girls and they finished just off the record," Walker said. "The girls pulled out a come from behind victory to win it. Three days to go and I know they will take advantage of every second."
The championships start back up tomorrow at 11 a.m. for the prelims. For the full list of events and their times click here.Â
