The Southern Illinois men's tennis team is gearing up for a full weekend of competition. The Salukis will face Belmont, McKendree, and Washington University in their first home matches of the season Friday through Sunday.
After about a month-long break, the team is anxious to start competing again. Graduate assistant coach Jonny Rigby said the team is hungry to get back on to the courts.Â
"This weekend will be three good tests," Rigby said. "Belmont is consistently good, McKendree always gives us good matches and will be a good indicator to where we are compared with last year, and Wash U will potentially be one of the toughest matches."
SIU is 0-1 in the all-time series against Belmont, are 3-0 against McKendree and 2-0 against Washington University. Wash U is currently ranked No. 4 in Division III tennis and are 1-0 on the season.Â
"Wash U has good players and could ultimately be a good test for us, and fun for us to compete against a good team like that," said Rigby.
Rigby said everyone on the team is doing well in practice and is confident in their abilities as the weekend approaches. This will be the first home match for the newest member of the team, freshman Param Pun.Â
"Param gives the team more depth," Rigby said. "He is a solid, consistent player, which we needed in the bottom of our lineup. We are going to benefit having Param with us."
The first match it set from 2 p.m. on Friday against the Belmont Bruins at University Courts in Carbondale. Saturday's match against McKendree starts at 11:30, and Sunday's finale against Washington University begins at 11.
