The Saluki's men's tennis team finished their first day of matches in a busy weekend schedule. Southern Illinois defeated Belmont in its first home match of the season, 6-1. The Dawgs are now 2-1 in the spring season.
Early in the matches, SIU clinched the doubles point. Michal Kianicka and Piotr Baranski defeated Cedric Dujacquier and Hendrik Inno in No.1 doubles, 6-4. Alex Pozo and Daniel Martinez defeated Bruno Russo and Vincent Sterkens 6-2 in No. 3 doubles. Wilder Pimentel and Peter Molloy did not finish their match against Stephen Goldman and Zak Khan.
The Salukis also dominated singles play with a 5-1 advantage. Piotr Baranski defeated Ducjacquier in No. 1 singles after a tie breaking match of 14-12.
Jonny Rigby, the graduate assistant and coach said the win against the Bruins today gave the team good energy.
"Belmont has had some big wins this season," Rigby said. "Getting a win against a team like that gives us confidence."
The boost of confidence from the win could carry over into the rest of the weekend as SIU takes on McKendree University in its second day of play tomorrow.
"We are happy as a team with how we competed today but we know that we can improve." Rigby said. "We will do everything we can to put on another good performance tomorrow. If we perform to the level we believe we can, we can get a positive result. However, we know that Mckendree has some good players so we can't afford to be complacent."
The Salukis are back in action tomorrow at home. The match against the Bearcats is set to start at 11:30 a.m. at University Courts.
