Bryn Handley named MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week

Southern Illinois swimmer Bryn Handley was named the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Handley, a junior, holds a perfect 4.0 GPA in behavior analysis and therapy.

Handley won four titles at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships and earned the MVC's Elite 18 award. She was a member of SIU's 800-yard freestyle relay team that won the conference title, and Handley went on to win individual MVC titles in the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle and 1,650-yard freestyle, finishing the 2017 season undefeated in individual events.

To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
