STARKVILLE, MISS. – The Southern Illinois softball team split a pair of games on Friday on Day One of Mississippi State's February tournament. The Salukis lost the opener to Eastern Illinois, 7-0, before rallying to top North Florida, 5-3, in the afternoon.
Southern started its day with a loss to EIU. The Salukis and Panthers stayed even until the bottom of the second before Eastern broke through for a run. After two lead-off walks, the Panthers capitalized with a two-out hit to take a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the third, a lead-off walk, a double, and a throwing error helped Eastern get two more runs to stretch their lead to 3-0. The bottom of the fourth featured to home runs for Eastern. The Salukis, who were shutout for the first time this season, left seven runners on base throughout the game..
SIU bounced back in the second game, picking up their first win in Starkville. Southern started Nicole Doyle in game two and she went the distance. Through the first four innings Doyle allowed only one run on four hits.
Southern left five more runners on base in the first four innings before breaking through in the fifth. The bottom of the fifth started with two quick outs, but Susie Baranski walked and Merri Anne Patterson reached on an error. Sydney Jones followed Patterson with a walk to load the bases. SIU then rattled off three-consecutive singles from Haley Andrus, Shaye Harre, and Maddy Vermejan to take a 5-3 lead.
That was all Doyle needed to get her first victory of 2017. She finished the game with six strikeouts and only allowed one extra base hit.
The win moved SIU to 7-5 on the year. The Salukis will be back in action tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. to play the host team, Mississippi State.
