STARKVILLE, MISS. - Saluki softball finished in second place at the February Freezer weekend tournament. Southern played against the host team, Mississippi State, in the championship game today and lost, 6-2.
The game started off with a big swing in Southern Illinois' favor. Susie Baranski drew a lead off walk, followed by Eyrika Brandenburg reaching on an error, putting runners at second and first for Merri Anne Patterson. Patterson bunted them over to second and third, sacrificing the first out of the inning. The Bulldogs were able to get another out directly following the bunt, leaving SIU with only one out left. Shaye Harre was up next and made it hurt with a single up the middle, scoring two.Â
Southern held on to a 2-0 lead until the bottom of the second. Mississippi State cut the deficit to one after picking up two timely singles with two outs. Nicole Doyle responded, getting out of the inning the next batter.
SIU kept its one-run lead until the bottom half of the fourth inning. The inning started with a lead-off double then two quick outs by Southern. However, MSU had a two-out rally, scoring four runs on three more hits, including a three-run home run.
The four-run margin was all the Bulldogs needed to close out the game for a victory, winning their own tournament. SIU moves to 8-7 on the year and now returns home to host a tournament of their own, the Coach B Classic, this upcoming weekend.
