
Coach B Classic Notes and Links

CARBONDALE, ILL. – The Softball program finally comes home for the Coach B Classic, playing the first three weeks of their schedule on the road. The Salukis welcome the University of Kentucky, Northern Illinois, Western Illinois, University of Illinois-Chicago, and Murray State to town for the three-day tournament.
After three weeks in to the season the Southern Illinois is 8-7 on the year. The first two weekends of the year the team went 3-2 at both tournaments, picking up key wins over Michigan State, University of Massachusetts (UMass), and Army. This past weekend the team went to Starkville, Mississippi for a tournament hosted by SEC school, Mississippi State. SIU finished in second place, losing to MSU in the championship game.
The Salukis have been lead at the plate by their upper classmen. After a slow start, Shaye Harre currently leads SIU in batting average, on base percentage, hits, and walks. Fellow senior, Merri Anne Patterson, leads the team in RBIs, raking in 12 so far on the season, and is second in slugging percentage. Patterson also leads the team with six stolen bases. Junior, Sydney Jones, has belted four home runs for the maroon and white so far this season to lead to the club. Jones also is second on the team in hits and runs.
On the mound all three pitchers on the roster have found success. Brianna Jones leads the team in ERA, innings pitched, and opposing batting average. The sophomore also threw a no-hitter against Mississippi Valley State. Jones, along with Nicole Doyle, has 31 strikeouts on the year. Doyle is coming off a very productive weekend in Mississippi. The sophomore won her first two games of the season, coming against North Florida and Eastern Illinois. The oldest pitcher in the squad, Savanna Dover, ties Jones for the most wins on the team with three. Dover has started five games so far this season, four of which were complete games. The Saluki junior also leads the team in shutouts this season with three.
QUICK SCOUT FOR THE WEEKEND
Kentucky – is the No. 19 team in the country as of Feb. 28 rankings. UK is 10-4 on the year and are coming off a perfect, 5-0 weekend in Boca Raton, Florida.
Western Illinois – comes to Carbondale with a 4-9 record. The Leathernecks are coming off a 2-2 weekend in Conway, Arkansas. WIU picked up wins over Central Arkansas and Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Northern Illinois – enters the Coach B Classic with a 6-3 record, with notable wins over Kansas and Rutgers University. The Huskies are lead by Alex Frenz on the mound, who has a 3-0 record and a . 79 ERA.
Murray State – has the best record of any team this weekend at 11-4. The Racers most recently went 3-2 this past weekend, one of the losses coming to UAB, 4-0.
