CARBONDALE, ILL. - The Southern Illinois University women's tennis program won it's third and fourth match of the season today, after defeating UT-Martin this morning and Lindsey Wilson College in the afternoon. The two wins moves SIU's record back to .500, 4-4.
SIU won the match against UT-Martin this morning, 4-2. The Salukis jumped on the Skyhawks early, winning the doubles point. Meaghan Monaghan and Vitoria Beirao played from the No. 2 doubles spot and won in extras, 7-5. UTM was able to win from the No. 2 doubles position, but Polina Dozortseva and Tereza Klocova sealed the deal winning 6-4 at the No. 3 spot.
The success rolled over into singles play for SIU. The Dawgs won three of the five match that finished. Cordero, Dozortseva, and Beirao all picked up straight set wins to clinch the victory for Southern.
After a small break in the middle of the day the Salukis were ready for their second match against Lindsey Wilson College. This match came down to the final match to decide a winner and SIU came out on top, 4-3. Like the first match, SIU jumped out to an early lead, winning the doubles point. Dozortseva and Klocova won again from the No. 3 spot, and the pairing of Monaghan and Beiroa won 6-4 at the No. 2 slot.
In singles play both teams were able to pick up two quick wins, making the score 3-2. LWC grabbed one more to tie everything up, leaving the fate of the match in the results of No. 1 singles dual. Cordero lost the first set, 5-7, and then rallied her way back to win set two, 6-1. In the third set the senior truly shined, winning 6-2 to win the match.
"Ana Sofia showed a lot of fight and played like a senior," head coach Audra Anderson said. "I'm so proud of these girls and the way they persevered today. Both teams were tough."
The two wins moves SIU's winning streak to four in a row. The team will play the University of Louisville and the University of Indiana on the road next weekend.
