CARBONDALE, ILL. - This week the men's swimming and diving team will host the Mid-American Conference Championships starting Wednesday and going through Saturday. Southern Illinois University is one of seven teams in the field looking to grab the title.
Last season the Salukis finished in fourth place at the championships. SIU won four titles during the four-day meet and three members of the 2017 team were apart of the title wins. Andre Brilhante was apart of both championship relay teams (200-yard freestyle relay & 400-yard medley relay), Bobby Wood swam the second leg in the 400-yard medley relay, and Filippo Dell'Olio captured an individual title in the 200-yard butterfly for the Salukis.

Over the course of the season the men's team have competed in seven meets. Southern was last in action nearly a month ago at the Butler Invite. SIU took first of six teams at the meet, scoring 50 points better than the second place team. After the Butler meet SIU had 18 top ten times in the MAC, spread across 13 different events. Going into this year's championships the favorite is Eastern Michigan. The Eagles won the title last year when they hosted in Ypsilanti, Michigan by more than 100 points. University at Buffalo finished in second place, followed by Missouri State and Southern. EMU received three of the seven first place votes in the pre-championship poll for the 2016-17 season and are favored to repeat. Buffalo was close behind them with two, and MSU came in third receiving the final vote.
